ps

Beth has told me that I should say something nice about Christians, and since Beth knows best, I will.

Christians are the nicest people available and my best friends are exclusively Christians. The individuals of the very highest quality are Christians and if they did not exist they would have to be invented. I just have the following issues with us:

1) Christians should stop caring about gay-marriage and abortion until we have taken care of war, poverty, injustice, and ignorance.

2) Creationism should not be snuck into classrooms under the dubious auspices of intelligent design. The world is not 6,000 years old. Sorry, it's just not.

3) Christians should not vote for a politician who a)rigs elections, b)rigs wars, and c)hurts the poor while d)helping rich people get richer, simply because he says he is a Christian.

Anyways, I love Christians, but many of them (particularly those represented by Pat Robertson and the American Right) need a hard kick in the buttocks. We should be the ones bringing warlords and robber-barons down, not the ones propping them up.

Why should we stop caring about abortion? Doesn't that tie right in with injustice?

All I know is, the oil I put in my engine depends on the world being alot older than 6000 years. So do the diamonds on my wifes engagement ring. So do the dinosaur bones at the Tyrell museum. So does a supernova (in this case the universe needs to be a lot older.

Anyways, I'm afraid that believing the universe is only a few thousand years old creates some real problems for anyone who is interested in science.

As for what I said about abortion. I just think that for some reason the Christian right has a bizarre fixation on this one issue (as well as gay rights). Politicians use these issues to distract attention from the much, much, much worse crimes they are permitting or committing around the globe and at home. People die of malnutrition in the USA. If you are going to campaign against a woman being able to get an abortion, you damn well better be campaigning for her rights to a decent standard of living, otherwise you are an ignorant hypocrite.

Also, think about this, the shame of being found out to have had premarital sex (because of the tremendous judgement it effects) is undoubtedly a major motivation to get an abortion for many people. Do we Christians wag the finger at those who have children out of wedlock, and then cry bloody murder when someone gets an abortion because they couldn't face our judgement?

You shouldn't be allowed to protest abortion unless you have first campaigned for the rights of the poor.

some agreements, some dis-agreements. Too bad my dirty rotter heart is the same as every other simple sinner. Too bad the world isn't perfect. Too bad its easier to talk than walk. Too bad, so sad, try again tomorrow.
